I am now licensed by the University of Illinois to propagate WineCrispTM apples, and has received Patent No. PP20437. This is a new larger red and later apple, it carries the Vf gene for scab resistance, and was developed by traditional breeding techniques. Contact me to see if I can be of assistance in your orchard projects. Use e-mail link to Bill Meyer for cider & All About Apples lower left. I can assist in planning a new orchard, maintaining production in an established planting, in the rejuvenation of an older orchard, or propagating a new tree/s from your favorite apple tree. For further information on the grafting techniques show below, contact me by phone or email.

NITCH & NOTCH: Photo left: Restructuring of 18 year old grafted tree. Rootstock is M-7, Interstem of Empress, grafted to Sugarcrisp in 2008. Photo right: Result of using "Nitching and Notching" techniques to initiate branch renewal, note branch initiation below notch cut.

SIDE GRAFT: The first photo on the left shows 2-year old Paulared on B-9 before grafting. Right photo shows area chosen for inserting the bark graft. Left photo below shows first L-cut for inserting the scion. Right photo below shows scion inserted with color coded tape on tip. Lower left photo shows scion taped and ready for graft seal paint.

Left photo: scion slipped into cuts made in trunk. Right photo shows graft after taping, before tree seal.

CHAIN SAW GIRDLING:Left photo: Over vigorous scion rooted Honeycrisp on MM26, and chain saw cuts made to slow vegetative growth. Right photo: Over vigorous growth has slowed, there is increased light penetration.

BARK GRAFTS: Left photo: Bark grafts placed on McIntosh on M111, May 2008. Right photo: Growth after one year.

I have decades of experience in: appraising, consulting, grafting, pruning, budding, spray programs and orchard planning. Let's discuss varieties - your own family favorites or heirloom varieties. I have worked for large and small orchards, retail, wholesale, organic, hobby orchards, and in cider production.

If you think your operation could benefit from experience, new observations, and just plain conversation, or an orchard evaluation -- then contact me at All About Apples. 58 years of experience.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CUTTING AND MAILING SCION WOOD

If you are cutting scion wood for mailing, the photo on the left shows the type of wood that should be cut to provide good and viable scion wood. One year old terminal growth has the best characteristic for successful grafting. The length of the cut stems should be 1' to 2' long, and the thickness of a pencil at the mid point of the stem. The cut wood should be wrapped with wet paper, and placed inside a plastic bag, kept below 40 F until mailing. It takes 3" - 4" scion wood per graft.

The photo on the right shows the scion wood grafted to the rootstock. When the grafted trees are received, always handle the tree below the graft, and kept below 40 F, but above freezing, before planting.

For the spring of each year All About Apples will offer bench grafted trees with the variety of your choice on rootstock of your choice (subject to availability). For prices, I need to know variety, rootstock and quantities and who will furnish the materials, plus time required to complete.
